This policy has been put together as a result of work to ensure we deliver single sex accommodation and as a direct result of patient feedback.

Patients expect excellent care and delivering this for every patient every time is the aim of the Trust quality strategy “Simply the Best”. To achieve this we know that we need to address any inconsistencies in; the quality of care we provide, staff behaviour and in the quality of the facilities. We aim to provide every patient with a high standard of privacy and dignity when they are being treated and ensure patients are able to discuss sensitive and embarrassing conditions with a stranger without difficulty. Patients also want their modesty and dignity protecting.

The Trust, in accordance with guidance issued since 2007 (CNO (2007), NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement (2007), has been working to improve privacy and dignity within clinical facilities, particularly focusing on ensuring that:

• Men and women have separate sleeping areas (e.g. single sex bays) and
• Separate toilets and bathrooms that they can reach without having to pass through (or close to) opposite sex areas.
