Emergency Care Centre
Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital
The Emergency Care Centre at Grimsby deals with 50,000 new patients per year,
experiencing an annual increase of approximately 1,500 new attendances.
The department is a 24 hour open access service to the public with dedicated, enthusiastic
staff committed to high standards of patient care.
We serve two large towns, Grimsby, a port town, and Cleethorpes, a seaside resort, along
with the smaller port of Immingham and an extensive rural population. The area contains a holiday park, a
Theme Park, numerous factories, a port, a regional airport and a motor cycle race track.
As we deal with a huge variety of conditions from the life threatening to the very minor we
operate a system of triage. This means that patients are sorted into the degree of urgency, the most urgent
seen first, not necessarily in the order of attendance. We also deal with almost every department within the
hospital and numerous outside agencies.
The department has Major Trauma Accreditation, meaning we are a receiving hospital for trauma.
A team of surgeons, anaesthetists, orthopaedics doctors and A&E staff respond to trauma calls. This team of
specialist staff are able to make rapid decisions on the care needed for patients with multiple injuries.
Our highly motivated, friendly staff have a wide range of professional and educational
qualifications, which also a include a team of RSCN's (Registered Sick Children's' Nurse) working to improve
children's services.
Recent structural improvements to the department include a new three bed resuscitation area, a
separate child waiting area, security doors with coded locks and a new reception area. The Department has also
recently purchased a special inflatable unit, which will decontaminate those patients who have been
contaminated by chemicals.
Security has a high priority, personal protection training is undertaken by all staff,
security personnel are available 24hours and are based adjacent to the department. We also foster good
relations with the local police force and even have a police room in the waiting area. |
