League of Friends of the Grimsby Hospitals |

IntroductionRegistered Charities No. 230540The League of Friends of the Grimsby Hospitals is a voluntary organisation which raises money for the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital. The League formed in 1956 when an enthusiastic group of business men and women met at the old hospital to form what is now known as The League of Friends of the Grimsby Hospitals. Plural, as in those days there were three hospitals serving the Grimsby area. The NHS was in its infancy and even then it was realised that government funds could not provide everything needed. Funds provide even less now and the League continues its work, still operating on a shoestring budget. League members are all volunteers, from all walks of life and age groups. Each bring varied skills, useful contacts and ideas and give their valuable time and services. What do we do?The League raises funds by organising events, such as the Hospital Gala, cheese and wine evenings, race nights, car boot sales, and the Summer Prize Draw to name but a few. The League also receives donations and legacies, which are a tremendous, help with the work we do. In the early years of the League we provided such things as flower vases, water jugs, bedside tables, seats for visitors and curtains for the larger wards to give some privacy to patients. As time progressed such things as portable radios and televisions were supplied. In recent times we are spending up to £90,000 per year and supplying more sophisticated and extremely expensive medical and surgical equipment that would not be funded by the NHS. The supply of major pieces of equipment has enabled people to receive treatment as outpatients rather than having to stay in hospital. The League actively supports Hospital Radio by funding equipment and also helped to fund the Hospital Chapel and Quiet Room. The League charter now also encompasses help within the community (Hospital and Community Friends). The League is very careful not to impose its wishes onto the hospital and community agencies but relies on consultants, staff members and agencies to ask for help, equipment and amenities, which they need for their department or agency. |
