Acute medical unit (AMU)
When patients are admitted onto the AMU at Grimsby hospital from either our emergency care centre or from a GP referral, they receive a full comprehensive nursing and medical assessment.
They are stabilised and then either transferred to another medical ward to continue their treatment or discharged home within 24 hours of admission. The unit has 39 beds and is split into two parts: assessment and short stay. The assessment area, which has 14 beds delivers a rapid turnaround of patients once admitted. The 31 bedded short stay ward has two basic functions:
- As an area for intensive work on patients who do not need to stay for more than one night, and who do not need to be transferred to the care of a consultant within one of the specialties
- As a staging area for patients waiting to move into specialty ward areas.
