IntroductionThe Colposcopy departments at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital carries out colposcopy examinations primarily for women who have been reported to have abnormal cells on cervical cytology (smear test from the neck of the womb). Some women attend this clinic following referrals from their GPs or other gynaecologists because of bleeding after intercourse, bleeding in between periods or because of an abnormal appearance of the cervix. Less frequently women attend this clinic for minor operations following GP/gynaecologist referrals. A colposcope is a low-powered microscope, is used to examine the woman’s cervix to assess the extent and severity of any problem and to determine appropriate treatment. The examination and treatment are carried out by 3 colposcopists accredited by the governing body the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. They are ably supported by a team of experienced nurses, secretarial and clerical assistants. Colposcopy ClinicsDiana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby
