IntroductionYou can be referred via your GP or other Medical Doctor into the Gynaecology department for a number of reasons. This might be general gynaecological problems such as pain in your stomach or excessive bleeding, or more particular concerns such as fertility problems or suspected cancer. The Department of Gynaecology provides comprehensive care for acute and elective gynaecological disorders. Our department is led by a Clinical Director who is one of a group of 6 Consultants, leading a large team of doctors. Medical students from two universities are also attached to our department. Usually women are seen within an outpatient clinic setting by the Consultant or his team, where a full medical history and usually and examination will be undertaken. Some specialist clinics such as post-menopausal bleeding clinic, the doctor will take your history but also perform diagnostic tests such as a scan or a hysteroscopy (a thin telescope inserted into the uterus through the cervix). Full information would be given to you within your appointment letter. We also provide colposcopy clinics, where ladies will attend via irregular smear test results, or as a referral from their GP. You may also be referred into our fertility clinic if you are having trouble conceiving a child. We are able to assess any physical problems that may be hindering conception and address these accordingly. Our uro-gynaecology clinic also runs each week to enable joint problems that you may have in terms of urological and gynaecological symptoms, such as urinary incontinence. When you first visit us, this is usually within our Gynaecology outpatients, which is a new purpose built unit for women. We also have a dedicated Gynaecology ward for women being admitted for major operations. For women who do not need to stay in overnight we have a purpose built day surgery unit. Our team are always on hand to offer advice and support to all of our patients and their families or carers. So please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further help regarding your condition or stay in hospital. |
