Osteoporosis Clinic |
|
IntroductionOsteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones’ and is often referred to as the ‘fragile bone disease’. Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. The clinic is run twice monthly at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, and delivered by two Consultants and one Specialist registrar. There is cross-specialty specialty interest with one consultant having a background in Rheumatology and one in adult medicine. The number of patients per clinic is deliberately small, so every patient is given plenty of time and attention. The service is supported by DEXA scanning (which is the gold standard of investigation for osteoporosis), including vertebral assessment if indicated. The waiting list for DEXA scanning is one week or less. Reports for the scans are provided by one of the consultants, also in a timely manner. We also have a facility to administer intravenous drugs for osteoporosis and Paget's disease, and that can be done on the same day as the clinic, in the Diagnostic and Investigation Unit, in a clean environment with friendly staff. |
