Introduction
Providing services at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, Scunthorpe General
Hospital and Goole & District Hospital.
Wheelchair Services is situated on the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital site and serves the
population of the Grimsby area.
Scunthorpe and District Wheelchair Services are run by the North Lincolnshire PCT on the Brumby Hospital site.
At Grimsby we supply both powered and non-powered wheelchairs and special seating to people who have a
long-term need for a wheelchair. The criteria for provision of wheelchairs are outlined in a separate document
on the web site. We have registered on our database around 6000 users of wheelchairs in this area.
The service has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 which is a prestigious international award showing it provides a
good quality of service to its clients. This standard aims to continually enhance customer satisfaction with
the service provided.
The departmental accommodation comprises an office / reception area where our administration team receive our
patients, handle telephone calls and manage the administration around the provision, collection and repair of
wheelchairs, details of which are held on a database within the department. Our clinic accommodation has a
waiting room and assessment area where our Wheelchair Therapist and Rehabilitation Engineer see people to
discuss their needs and make an assessment for the appropriate equipment. We have a stock of assessment chairs and cushions to enable people to try the equipment prior to provision.
Some people will require specially made equipment and this will be measured for and for special seating we may
take a cast of a person’s shape.
The Technical Team are located in workshops adjoining the Assessment area and Wheelchair store, where they
repair and refurbish wheelchairs and set them up for each individual delivery.
New chairs are delivered and others repaired daily by one of the technical staff in our specially equipped
vehicle, this enables as many as possible to be repaired in a person’s home. There is equipment in our
workshops to enable us to completely strip the chair down, shot blast the frame and parts, re-spray and
reassemble the chair to enable efficient re-use of our fleet of wheelchairs. The Rehabilitation Engineer
checks that wheelchairs are produced to an acceptable quality and specification before being re-issued.
The Rehabilitation Engineer and Therapist may also assess people at their home, school, college or residential
and nursing homes.
We also have an FSA (Force Sensory Array) pressure monitor to assess the pressure a person exerts on a chair
in sitting. This means that, for people who have a high risk of developing pressure sores, we can accurately
assess the correct cushion for them. |
