People who’ve experienced hospital or community care are being asked to become an active voice by volunteering as a ‘patient representative’.
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole hospitals and community care in North Lincolnshire, is looking to increase the number of patient representatives it has, to make sure patients’ views are heard.
Jo Loughborough, patient experience lead, said: “Our patient representatives are essential to our organisation and the way we develop and improve care for our patients.
“They will have a say in decisions made about patient care and will help to provide a patient voice by sitting on different meetings and panels. We really value the opinions of current or former patients, as well as carers, as they understand what matters most to people who are receiving hospital treatment or care at home from our community teams. Their experiences can help us understand what’s right for our patients at different times throughout their journey with us, which can help to improve the quality of care we provide.”
Jo added: “It’s important we have people working with us who are interested in making a difference to their local hospital. We’re looking for people who are really passionate about helping others and determined to see our patients receive the best care, just as we are.”
The voluntary role would potentially involve a variety of commitments depending on the area covered, this may include attending meetings, reviewing documents, or talking to patients or members of the public to help gather more information.
If you’d like to find out more, please email Jo on firstname.lastname@example.org. To be considered for the voluntary role, you must be over 18 years old and able to dedicate a small amount of time each month, either virtually or at one of our hospital sites. A DBS check will also be carried out prior to acceptance. There will be training sessions for all representatives before they start their role and support given throughout their involvement.
