Patients and their families whose lives have been touched by lung cancer are being invited to a weekly support session.
Each week, a member of the lung cancer team at Scunthorpe General Hospital will be on hand to give advice and support.
Carole Scott, Macmillan lung cancer nurse specialist, said: “For most people, the diagnosis and treatment for lung cancer can be a really daunting time. For those going through it or those who’ve come through the other side, it’s important that they feel there’s someone available for them to talk to.
“Whether it’s a cup of tea and a chat, help with understanding a diagnosis or advice about handling treatment symptoms, these support sessions are for anyone on the lung cancer journey.”
Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. Around 47,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK. Treatment can include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or medication depending on the severity.
The sessions will start in November, which marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The first will be an introductory session on Thursday 7 November, with weekly drop-ins taking place every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm in the Macmillan Information Centre at Scunthorpe General Hospital. The sessions will start officially from Thursday 21 November.
Carole added: “Those who come along will be able to have a quiet, confidential, one-on-one chat with a specialist lung nurse from the team.
“It’s a local drop-in for local people, so we’re encouraging anyone in the area who’s suffered from, or is living with lung cancer, to come along and speak to us about any concerns or worries they have. We have lots of information at the centre for people to take away and we can help them with accessing community services too.”
