Our physiotherapists work as part of the wider children’s therapy team providing physiotherapy to babies, children and young people in North Lincolnshire.
Therapy is provided through:
Links with the hospital
We provide advice and training for the physiotherapists working with babies and children in hospital. We also run joint clinics with the paediatricians as well as with some of the hospital consultants to streamline the care for children with a variety of needs including childhood arthritis and orthopaedic conditions.
The child development centre
We are based at the child development centre in Scunthorpe where we:
- See children and young people for assessment
- Provide therapy sessions in our gym
- Work closely with parents and other professionals to assess and meet the needs of children who need help in more than one area of their development.
Working in the community
We want to make sure that children with physical difficulties get the opportunities they deserve and receive the support they need at home, at school or nursery, and as part of the community. For this reason, we are sometimes able to offer visits to home, mainstream schools or nurseries, and have been involved in project work linked to inclusive sport.
St Luke’s special school and St Hugh’s specialist communication and interaction college have a named physiotherapist who visits regularly. The physiotherapist works closely with school staff, parents, speech and language therapists, the nurse in school, and occupational therapists to meet the needs of children with physical disabilities. Specialist support is offered which may include a therapy programme, advice on moving and handling and assessment for equipment.
In St Hugh’s School there is an additional physiotherapy assistant, funded by the school, who is able to provide extra physiotherapy for the children with the highest level of need. She works very closely with the physiotherapist to deliver individual programmes.
Children can be referred to the service by health visitors, school nurses, GPs, hospital staff and other therapists. If you have a concern about your child please contact one of the people above to discuss whether a referral would be helpful.
