Children's services
We offer a wide range of services for children and young people both in hospital and out in the community. Our dedicated and highly skilled medical and nursing teams offer a friendly and supportive service.
Hospital services
We have a family centred approach to care delivery and parents are encouraged to stay over with their children should they wish to.
The Disney ward at Scunthorpe and Rainforest ward at Grimsby both provide care for babies, children and young people from birth to 16 year’s old, who require treatment for a range of general medicine conditions, diabetes and mental health.
We also look after children who are coming into the hospital for surgery including maxillofacial, opthalmology, dental (Scunthorpe only), orthopaedics, urology and ENT. Both hospitals have a level two neonatal unit and at Grimsby there is a paediatric assessment observation unit within the emergency care centre.
We operate an open visiting policy for parents but ask that all other visitors are asked to arrange their visits between 2pm and 6pm, with only two visitors at the bedside at one time. Visiting outside of these hours should be agreed with the ward manager or deputy ward manager.
Outpatients
We run clinics for a wide range of conditions and illnesses for children aged up to 16. These include allergy, ADHD, cardiology, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, gastroenterology, neurology, epilepsy, orthopaedics, audiology and renal. Pre-pperative assessment clinics are also held for children having elective procedures. Some clinics are run by consultants from specialist children’s hopsitals (Sheffield and Leeds).
Nurse’s and nursery nurses assess the children on arrival as required, measuring their weight, height and blood pressure. Urine samples may be required as part of the initial assessment. The Outpatient Nurse’s also perform day case procedures and do children’s blood tests.
General paediatric and diabetes clinics are also held at Goole and District Hospital. At Scunthorpe General Hospital the outpatients department is located on ‘B’ floor near the Church Lane entrance) and at Grimsby it’s in the family services building.
Videos
We know coming into hospital can be daunting so our Paediatric teams have created these videos to let children know what to expect. A big thank you to Jaw media for producing these videos which were filmed before Covid-19:
