A new £600,000 Special Procedures scanner at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby has welcomed its first patients this week.
Primarily used to treat cancer patients and those undergoing palliative care, the state-of-the-art scanner will help us to carry out a wide range of minimally invasive procedures.
These can range from inserting stents to biopsies, and nephrostomy procedures, which involve helping to drain urine directly from the kidneys.
Other procedures available in the new area include treating enlarged blood vessels in the scrotum – which can affect fertility – and giving orthopaedic patients injections into their joints to help with conditions such as arthritis.
And with the new equipment’s large-scale screen and capability to render live X Rays and 3D images, along with the newly refurbished light and airy space, the team believe it will help us to provide a much better experience for patients.

The refurbishment of the area has also included a range of measures to help patients to relax and feel more at ease during procedures, including the installation of privacy glass in the control room and the ability to listen to music of their choice.
Dr Joseph Alex, Radiology Consultant in Specialist Cancer and Support Services, said: “Our previous scanner was coming to the end of its useful life, so it’s wonderful to have this new equipment in place which will be more reliable and provide us with higher quality images to work from.”
Imaging Senior General Manager, Anita Echlin, added: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in delivering this project, from the Capital team who have project managed the refurbishment, to the clinical team who have been involved throughout the process.
“This is a fantastic facility for our patients in North East Lincolnshire and it will allow us to continue to provide these services for many years to come.”
