A fundraiser is walking between two hospitals to raise money for the breast unit which looked after her.
Mary Vickers was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram in June 2024. She received treatment at The Pink Rose Suite at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, as well as radiotherapy at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.
Now she’s embarking on a five-day walk between Castle Hill and Grimsby hospital. Mary, 68, will be splitting up the walk, so she does part of the 50 mile journey every day between 6 and 10 October.
She said: “I received excellent treatment from the staff on the Pink Rose Suite, so wanted to give something back to say thanks. This is why I’ve chosen to raise money for the unit. There are several things they need that can’t be routinely provide without donations.
“I’ve set a target to raise £1,000 but I just hope to get as much as possible. If anyone is able to donate, then please do.”
The Pink Rose Suite cares for people who need to use its breast imaging and diagnostic service.
Mary added: “I’ll use prettier and quieter routes on the walk, rather than main roads. The overall walk will be at least 50 miles – the actual route may vary according to weather but it will all be recorded on a fitness tracker.
“I also want to raise awareness of the importance of going for a mammogram when called. Sadly, so many just don’t turn up, but having a mammogram can save your life! So if you’re called, go!
“Another reason for walking is I want to raise awareness of the importance of weight-bearing exercise. My ongoing treatment means I could experience lower calcium levels in my bones – but this happens to many as we age anyway. This is not just for women but everyone. Weightbearing exercise can help prevent this calcium loss.”
The walk is particularly timely as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Helen Lindley, Advanced Nurse Practitioner/Lead Nurse on The Pink Rose Suite, said: “I want to say a big thank you to Mary for taking on this challenge. The funds she’ll raise will go towards improving patient experience on the unit. We have a number of ideas for what we’ll spend the money on. Good luck on your walk!”
