Aspiring medical students from across the region have taken part in our largest-ever Future Medical Careers Summer School, gaining hands-on experience and insight into a career in medicine.
The free four-day programme was designed to support young people preparing to apply to medical school this autumn. Following a competitive application process, all 15 successful applicants took part in a range of activities delivered by clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
Students experienced simulation activities in orthopaedic surgery, midwifery, pharmacy and emergency care, while also meeting consultant doctors, researchers and admissions leads from Hull York Medical School. The programme provided insight into general practice, and helped participants develop communication and problem-solving skills through interactive activities, including an escape room challenge.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of students saying they would recommend the programme to others. Every participant said the four-day programme had helped them better understand medicine as a career, while 80% said it had strengthened or increased their desire to apply to study medicine.
Anne Burdis, Widening Participation Manager for NHS Humber Health Partnership, said: “We are incredibly proud to offer this opportunity free of charge to local students. The programme showcases the expertise we have across the Partnership and gives young people a realistic insight into life in healthcare. We hope it inspires many of them to pursue careers in medicine and, in the future, remain in the Humber region to build their careers and care for local communities.”
Students praised both the practical experiences and opportunities to learn from healthcare professionals.
One participant said: “The summer school gave me a real insight into what a career in medicine involves, and helped me understand the different specialties available.”
Another added: “The variety of sessions showed how every member of the healthcare team plays an important role in delivering patient care.”

One student also highlighted the breadth of the programme: “The experience helped me explore different career pathways and even consider specialties I hadn’t thought about before.” The Future Medical Careers Summer School forms part of NHS Humber Health Partnership’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals, and supporting local talent to pursue careers in medicine.
