Some of our top teachers have scooped awards at this year’s Hull York Medical School (HYMS) Teaching Excellence Awards.
They were nominated by their students in recognition of their excellence, commitment in clinical education and levels of student support.
Our winning teachers
Nursing and Allied Health Professions Award
Tracy Ibbotson, deputy clinical sister at Grimsby Hospital.
She said: “It’s quite unexpected but an absolutely lovely surprise and honour.
“It’s also down to the fantastic team I work with on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) who also supported our students so well.
“We had amazing students who really helped us too and it is fantastic to know they had a positive and rewarding learning experience with us. We miss them lots.”
Undergraduate Medicine Phase II and III Tutor of Excellence
Dr Annang Asumang, consultant anaesthetist at Grimsby hospital
Dr Asumang said: “I am very pleased for this wonderful feedback from our students and immensely grateful for the recognition by the Medical School.
“This achievement has only been possible due to the unstinting support of my anaesthetic and critical care medical and nursing colleagues in Grimsby, and the Medical School administrative staff.
“I greatly cherish this honour which I gladly share with all of them.”
Dr Joseph Pickles, clinical teaching fellow at Scunthorpe hospital
Dr Pickles added: “Thank you so much to HYMS for this award and a particular thank you to the students who nominated me.
“It has been a pleasure and an honour to play a role in your education and see you develop over the last year. A big shout out to all of the other HYMS staff across the Trust – I couldn’t have done this without you!”
Team Excellence Award
The Diagnostic and Investigation Unit (DIU) at Grimsby hospital.
Anne-Marie Dunks, staff nurse on Grimsby DIU, said: “It is so lovely to hear we have won. When we do have students on here, we try and include them in the team.
“We are a nurse-led unit and we are all working together. Everybody has to learn and we are very supportive.”
