Today marked a key milestone in our £27 million transformation of Scunthorpe Hospital into one of the most environmentally sustainable healthcare sites in the UK.
State-of-the-art electric boilers – made to our specifications by Bosch – were delivered to site and craned into the new Spark energy centre this morning.
Replacing our existing gas-fuelled boilers with these electric-powered boilers is at the heart of a wider scheme of improvement works that will help to reduce our carbon footprint by 4,124.93 tonnes a year.
Group Deputy Director of Capital Services, Alex Best, said: “With the NHS representing more than 5% of the UK’s total carbon footprint, we know we’re a significant part of the problem. That also gives us the chance to play a big part in putting it right.
“We believe this scheme will make a significant difference and help to improve the local environment for the communities of Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire. The electric boilers we will be fitting are handmade by Bosch and have been specifically designed to meet our needs, providing ecological and economical heating and hot water.
“Alongside the boilers, we will also be making a wide range of additional improvements, including installing additional roof mounted solar panels, installation of Solar carports within car parks, upgrading our Building Management System (BMS) and improving our air handling systems. Pipework insulation will be upgraded, new double glazed, and thermally efficient windows will also be installed, our electrical systems will be upgraded, and we will also be insulating our flat roofs.
“What all this will do is allow us to provide a warm and comfortable environment for our patients to heal and recuperate, whilst significantly reducing our carbon footprint.”
The scheme has been predominantly funded by Salix – which has awarded NHS Humber Health Partnership £20.6 million from the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
As with previous decarbonisation schemes at our sites in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole, we are being supported in delivering the scheme by Lexica – working collaboratively with our inhouse teams and technical partners to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of the upgrades whilst maintaining site capability.
