Our midwifery team are inviting students from Northern Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire to learn about life as a midwife following the success of an inaugural careers event.
Humber Health Partnership will host its second “Springboard to Midwifery” event at Hull Royal Infirmary on August 12 for Year 12 learners considering midwifery courses at university.
Hospital midwives are collaborating with Hull City Council and Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) to host hands-on workshops to explain core clinical midwifery skills using simulation, without the need for students to enter busy clinical areas.
Helen Smith, Recruitment, Retention and Pastoral Lead Midwife at Hull Royal Infirmary, said planning for the second event is now under way following the success of the first event on April 2.
She said: “We were only able to offer a limited number of places for our first event and they were snapped up very quickly.
“We know there’s are many students in our area who are interested in midwifery so we’re putting on a second event to give them this amazing insight into this fantastically rewarding career.”
At the first event, held at Hull’s Clinical Skills building next to Hull Royal Infirmary, students took part in simulation exercises using mannekins. Midwives created “scenarios” including labour and delivery, a caesarean section in theatre and maternity care on a ward including breastfeeding and postnatal recovery.
Alongside the clinical aspects of midwifery, the hospital team also explained the supportive role midwives play throughout pregnancy, birth and those first essential weeks with a baby.
Springboard to Maternity builds on the success of previous ‘Day in the Life’ sessions run by the hospital’s education and clinical teams to help students explore potential careers in the NHS.
All career leads at schools with sixth form students and further education colleagues in the Humber Health Partnership will be contacted with details of the next opportunity and how to apply.
