A ward clerk from the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby has been crowned the NHS Humber Health Partnership ‘Healthcare Heroes’ winner, an award nominated for by patients and their families.
Bethany Martin, who works on Same Day Emergency Care at the town’s hospital, had been nominated by numerous patients for her exceptional kindness and professionalism. As the first point of contact for patients in the department, she was praised for creating a calm and reassuring environment at what can be a stressful time.
Her nomination said: “Despite working in a busy, fast-paced department, she never rushes interactions, listens attentively, and treats all patients with dignity and respect. Feedback highlights her ability to reduce anxiety, particularly for those who are vulnerable, confused, or distressed.”
Bethany was one of 15 winners announced at the Golden Stars awards ceremony, which celebrates and recognising the achievements of staff across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Amongst the other awards Socrates Tiaga, Nurse in Interventional Radiology was tipped as a rising star, Alison Crosland, Team Leader and Physiotherapist was hailed an inspirational leader, a Dr Senthilkumar Durairaj, Consultant Haematologist was crowned an unsung hero and a nurse Julie Bonewell, who had clocked up more than 45 years’ service won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Meanwhile teams from Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Hull were recognised for projects that resulted in early diagnoses and treatment, for delivering transformative research and for improving the working lives of staff with disabilities.
A surprise award of the evening was the Chief Executive’s award which was won by a team within our Digestive Diseases service that went above and beyond to care for a young vulnerable patient, ensuring she got the procedure she needed swiftly so she could be discharged home.
