What is a Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a test to take a closer look at the cervix (neck of the womb). During a colposcopy a smooth tube-shaped tool (speculum) is used to open the vagina to expose the cervix. A colposcope is used to examine the cervix in greater detail, the colposcope remains outside of the body.
Why have I been referred to colposcopy?
There are several reasons why you may have been referred to the Colposcopy Clinic. We see patients in the clinic for:
- Your cervical screening test (often known as a ‘smear test’) has identified abnormal cells on your cervix or your HPV test has returned positive in the last three screenings.
- Your GP or nurse has had some difficulty obtaining a cervical sample or it has returned inadequate on two consecutive occasions.
- Your GP is worried about the appearance of your cervix, vagina or vulva.
- If you have been experiencing symptoms such as bleeding after sex
What happens at my appointment?
When you arrive, please go to the reception desk where staff will check your personal details. You can then take a seat in the waiting area ready for your appointment, we aim to maintain appointment times, however, please be patient if there is an unexpected delay.
You will be called through to meet your colposcopist (a doctor or nurse specialist) who will take a brief history and explain what will happen at your appointment. Following this, the supporting staff will ask you to change and show you to the examination couch and help you to prepare for the colposcopy. The colposcopist will then carry out the examination.
How long your appointment takes will depend on which procedures are necessary, but it usually takes no longer than 30 minutes.
Where to go for your appointment
Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby
Your appointment will be on Ward B1 which is on the first floor of the main hospital building.

Changing your appointment
