Our speech and language therapists work as part of the wider children’s therapy team, providing speech and language therapy in schools, hospitals and children’s centres.
Overview of services
Therapy is provided to children and young people through:
Early years work in the community
We run clinics from at Barton Children’s Centre and the Ironstone Centre in Scunthorpe. We only accept referrals for children over the age of three. We work closely with parents, children centre staff, health visitors and nursery staff to help children who are late talkers get the best help possible.

Mainstream schools: Once a child starts school, they will usually be offered a school based speech and language therapy service. This is to make sure that school staff know how best to support them – and to minimise disruption to their learning. Close links with parents continue to be crucial – and parents are invited to all speech and language therapy sessions.
Special schools: St Luke’s and St Hugh’s school have speech and language therapists who visit regularly. The speech and language therapist works closely with school staff to meet the needs of children with communication difficulties and eating and drinking problems, who need specialist support in addition to the help already provided by the teaching team.
The child development centre
Some children may need help in more than one area of their development. Speech and language therapists at the Child Development Centre contribute to multi-disciplinary assessment of a child’s needs. They will then work with parents and the other professionals involved to provide the right help and support – which may include group sessions or visits to nursery / home.
Links with the hospital
We work in partnership with hospital staff to provide the right treatment and support for children. This includes providing help for babies and children with feeding difficulties.
